Newfoundland Cottages
Famous 1800’s Style
Replica Newfoundland Cottages
Elizabeth J Cottages were created with history, luxury and jaw-dropping unobstructed views of the Atlantic Ocean in mind. In addition, the cottages’ emphasis is on fine craftsmanship. The architectural designs incorporate modern updates into the reconstruction of 1800’s style Newfoundland cottages.
Newfoundland is rich in history that is firmly rooted in tradition where one can capture a glimpse of the past while enjoying modern day comforts. Our Bonavista Newfoundland Cottages for Rent offer visitors much insight into how Newfoundlanders have lived for centuries.
Bonavista is a fishing village with a community filled with generations of families living together. The people of Bonavista and Newfoundlanders in general, are warm, generous and friendly with a great sense of humor despite the challenges of life on the “Rock.” The line of laundry is out in every season and dried by the cold or warm wind.
Step away from the hectic pace of the cities and indulge your senses in luxury while the ocean lulls you into a peaceful state in one of our two luxury Newfoundland cottages for rent in Bonavista Newfoundland. Come and stay at Elizabeth J Cottages and hang your clothes on the cottage clothesline.
Both the Salt Box cottage and the Steep Gable Roof cottage once served as primary residences for Newfoundlanders. Both guest houses have immense character and are built as authentic as possible.
Salt Box Replica Cottage

The Salt Box Newfoundland cottage began to appear around 1870. The name “Saltbox” came from a design derived from an actual box of salt with the cedar roof short in the front and very long in the back. Inside the cottage the ceiling is 10 ft high slanting to 6 ft in the very back giving the bedrooms and bathroom a lovely cozy feeling. This Newfoundland cottage is a typical house of the era, even quick to build and extremely functional. Newfoundland salt box cottages were either a two story or a story and one-half. In this bygone era the stove on the main floor was the sole heating source so the small, upper half-story made sense allowing Newfoundlanders to roll into their beds and stay warm.
Steep Gable Roof Replica Cottage
The Steep Gable Roof Cottage first appeared in Newfoundland over 200 years ago. The name came from the steep (45 degree angle) peak roof with each side the same length that created a triangle at the ends of the houses called a gable. Inside the ceilings are 8 ft. across. Wooden shingles that were used were cut by hand. Practical and efficient, our Steep Gable roof Newfoundland cottage is a blend of modern construction and an enduring one and a half story design.
Self Catered Ocean Front Cottages
Elizabeth J Cottages are unique Canadian vacation homes and famous for its connection to nature. They are both self-catered oceanfront cottages with full kitchens and continental breakfast included. The cottages’ large decks offer fantastic views of Bonavista/Trinity Bay. The unbearable beauty of Mother Nature can be witnessed from every window. Our guests experience the feeling of home when they arrive and find their souls rejuvenated.
Whales, Icebergs & Puffins
Newfoundland Whales; The whales play and show off right in front of the cottages starting in late June until they leave the first week of September or later. Our guests can enjoy whale watching right from the comfort of the cottages. We also recommend that guests explore the exceptional local Whale Watching in Newfoundland tours if they want to see the whales up close.
Icebergs; Iceberg Alley lies right in front of our cottages. Our guests witness passing Newfoundland Icebergs right from the cottage decks. We offer the opportunity to go with a fisher and boat to see up close the enormous size and many colors of emerald light green/blue of the iceberg above the water and bear witness to the unfathomable size of the iceberg under water (and think of the Titanic).
Newfoundland’s Bird; Newfoundland’s beloved Atlantic Puffin birds are migratory, arriving in the Bonavista area in late April and leaving sometime in September. Our dear puffins are a must-see Newfoundland attraction. There is a wonderful tour that guests of Elizabeth J Cottages can take for seeing Newfoundland’s wild flora and the Atlantic puffin habitat.
