Frommer’s Travel Guide 2007-2010

Very Highly Recommends Discovering Elizabeth J. Cottages one of the finest cottage accommodations in all of Newfoundland and Labrador. Elizabeth J. Cottages are an unexpected slice of luxury at the end of the road and reflect the demand for upscale lodging in far away places.” No expense has been spared in the construction and interior design of these two spacious two-bedroom cottages that enjoy an absolute oceanfront setting on the edge of town. Think fine cotton linen sheets on an oversized bed, plush bath towels, a modern entertainment system, polished hardwood floors, and a private deck.” Styled on the Newfoundland saltbox and Gable Roof style of home, the cottages are anything but traditional. The units fill with natural light, and come with the unexpected niceties such as sleigh beds fitted with Egyptian cotton sheets, plush bath towels and breakfast provisions. Other highlights are a modern entertainment system, polished hardwood flooring, a private deck and barbecue, and a well-equipped kitchen. By Andrew Hempstead

PRESS RELEASE – June 16, 2005

Elizabeth J. Cottages puts charming historic Bonavista, Newfoundland and Labrador on the world stage:

The 2005 Summer Issue of TORO MAGAZINE featured ELIZABETH J. COTTAGES Bonavista, Newfoundland and Labrador as one of the top 11 Destinations in the world for Honeymooners.

This is good news for Bonavista and for The Province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Elizabeth J. Cottages, the brainchild of Elizabeth J. Zemdegs, started as a vision after Elizabeth J. and her husband visited Newfoundland and Labrador on a one-week holiday in June 2003. It was love at first sight. The night before they returned to Ontario, property was purchased on the ocean thinking it would be their summer home.

However, destiny intervened and Elizabeth J. and her husband decided to move permanently to Bonavista. Elizabeth J. became fascinated with Newfoundland and Labrador’s history, especially that of the Bonavista Peninsula. After hearing many stories of the demise of so many historical houses due to emigration Elizabeth J. had a vision in November 2003 to build new 18th Century Newfoundland and Labrador Architectural Historic Houses. Bonavista would regain lost architecture and tourists would have an accommodation that would transport them back in history.

On July 8th 2004, eight months later, Elizabeth J. Cottages, awarded 4 ½ stars by Canada Select opened the 1st Salt Box Cottage to the tourists. In August 12, 2004 the Steep Gable Roof Cottage opened. Sitting on a cliff right on the ocean, Elizabeth J. Cottages boasts of one of the most luxury filled cottages in all of Newfoundland and Labrador. Persian rugs, fireplaces, window box seats, fully loaded kitchen, living room and dining room, Jacuzzi, 2 bedroom Queen-sized Sleigh beds with 450 thread Egyptian Cotton linens, award winning local furniture and personal art collection. All windows lead to the ocean in both sound and sight. Watch Whales and Icebergs, unbearably beautiful sunsets, the cliffs off in the distance and uninterrupted horizon all at ones feet from large wooden decks furnished with the famous Muskoka chairs.

Elizabeth J. Cottages, seven months later was nominated in 2005 for the prestigious Hospitality Newfoundland and Labrador Orchid Award.
